At Brand Coffee Farm our agroferestry model is starting to get some shape. After 3 years we have planted our first coffee seedlings, we started to experiment with intercropping macadamia trees, vanilla plantes and banana trees in between the planted coffee. Due to climate change Uganda will/is also facing longer periods of severe draught.
In the previous 2 years we have been lucky with long periods of rain in August – October, but that can be different next year. Therefore agroforestry can provide an environment (micro climate) for coffee plants and other crops that will maintain higher levels of soil moisture. This will increase the chances of crops to survive in longer periods without any rainfall.
